Celebrating ESP Week: Ashley Cutler at GFMS

“Shine bright!” calls an enthusiastic voice as students walk out of the newly-created Connect room at Glens Falls Middle School. That encouraging voice belongs to Teaching Assistant Ashley Cutler, who works to bring out the best in students every day. “What's unique about my role is that I get to work with students at different grade levels all at the same time, giving them small-group or individualized support,” Mrs. Cutler says. “It can be challenging at times but it is highly rewarding.”

“Ashley’s mastery of schedule and logistical management ensures smooth daily operations for all her students,” notes GFMS Principal Carrie Mauro. ”It is a juggling act, and she manages it seamlessly!”

Mrs. Cutler’s service boosts student achievement in many ways, since she is a highly reliable team member who readily steps into critical support and instructional roles when needed.

“Students want to be included in the same classes as their friends and be offered the same opportunities as their peers,” Mrs. Cutler explains. “No one wants to be excluded. As a teaching assistant, I am able to work alongside classroom teachers and provide the support that individuals need to learn and grow alongside their classmates. This includes but is not limited to providing a quiet environment for specific assignments and tests, reading aloud, drawing diagrams, listening, or just providing brain breaks. It's about inclusion and I am just another tool in their toolbox to help them succeed.”

She notes that the most rewarding part of her job is seeing kids’ growth as the year progresses and knowing she was a part of their journey. “I was a GF parent before I was a staff member,” Ashley says. “I am extremely fortunate to have a job I enjoy, great coworkers, and get to spend extra time with my son and watch him grow. As a parent and staff member, I have met so many wonderful people in the community and have seen what can be accomplished when everyone comes together.”

Ashley grew up in western New York and graduated from Lewiston-Porter Senior High School in Lewiston, NY.  This is her second year with the district, having started as an aide in the Middle School and received her teaching assistant certification over the summer. Her favorite non-work activity? Being a baseball mom! Her son plays travel ball with the Saratoga Stampede, after previously playing with the Adirondack Rivercats.

Throughout the week, Nov. 17-21, we are highlighting our staff members whose various careers touch the lives of our students and pave the way for success! Education Support Professionals—our teacher aides, teaching assistants, secretaries, custodians, and many other team members—play a crucial role in every school building, every day. Check back every day this week to read about our wonderful team members who are being honored during ESP Week 2025!
