Cell Phone Policy

New York State’s new distraction-free schools law, which includes all devices that can connect to the internet, will take effect this fall for the 2025-26 school year. Governor Hochul’s cellphone policy creates a statewide standard for distraction-free schools in New York: No unsanctioned use of smartphones and other internet-enabled personal devices on school grounds in K-12 schools for the entire school day (from “bell to bell”), including classroom time and other settings like lunch and study hall periods.

Beginning in September, all Glens Falls City School students will be required to turn off and store their electronic devices — including cell phones, smartwatches, tablets, earbuds/headphones, and other internet-enabled devices not issued by the school — in their lockers during school hours. This means that all students in all grades must store their phones in their lockers for the whole day, from arrival in the morning to dismissal in the afternoon.

Students who elect to bring their cellular devices to school do so at their own risk and must follow all cell phone procedures. When indicated in a student's IEP or 504 plan, an internet-enabled device may be used as directed by the plan. This initiative aims to create a focused, respectful, and academically-driven environment that supports the success and well-being of all students.

Parents who need to get a message to their child during the school day should call the main office of the school, so that a message can be delivered to the student. In the case of an emergency, students can access a school phone in the Main Office at any time.

By working together, we can enhance the learning environment to minimize distractions, promote student engagement, and ensure academic integrity during the school day.
