Schedule changes for the last week of school

SUPERINTENDENT'S LETTER TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS

May 19, 2017

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Glens Falls City School District distributes printed calendars just before a new school year begins, but occasionally, it must adjust that calendar during the school year when unexpected scheduling conflicts, weather interruptions, or other issues arise. This year, several changes to the schedule are necessary for the last week of the 2016-17 school year.

In April, the New York State Education Department updated its guidelines for school calendars and state aid, and those updates led to changes during the last week of school in Glens Falls as well as other districts across the state. In addition, this year the district used four emergency closing days (i.e., snow days)—plus three 2-hour delay days—instead of the more typical three or fewer.

With the combination of updated state guidelines for school calendars and the requirement for schools to provide 180 days of instruction to receive full state aid, the district has had to revise its calendar for the remainder of the school year. Previously, Glens Falls students in grades K-8 were scheduled for half days of school on June 21-23. Now, the school year calendar is as follows:

  • Wednesday, June 21 - Full day of school for grades K-8

  • Thursday, June 22 - Full day of school for grades K-8

  • Friday, June 23 - Half day of school for grades K-8, with dismissal at 12:30 p.m.

School meal schedules will be adjusted accordingly to reflect these changes.

If you have questions about the revised schedule for the last week of school, please contact the school principal’s office.

Sincerely,

Paul Jenkins, Superintendent
